27. Abraham 03 Estes
From "The Estes Family" by Woodie B. Parrott published in the GreeneCounty Record (VA). May 17, 1973: "The apparent progenitor of theEstes family of Orange, Madison and Greene counties was Abraham Estes,Sr. He was born in 1662 and as proven by a Spottsylvania County Deed,he resided in King and Queen County. His wife's name was Barbara, although her maiden name is not known. The children of Abraham Estes,Sr. by his first marriage were Samuel, Thomas, Richard, Robert, andAbraham Estes, Jr. By his second marriage, he had issue includingJohn, Moses, Elisha, and Barbara."From: Cary-Estes Genealogy,(p.99) by Mary Folk Webb and Patrick MannEstes, 1939: "Abraham Estes owned 200 acres of land in King and QueenCounty [VA] in 1704 ("The Planters of Colonial Virginia," by Thomas J.Wertenbaker. A true account of the Lands in King and Queen County in1704); d. Nov. 21, 1720 (Amelia File Box, May Court 1785); md. Barbara--. Children: Abraham Estes, Jr., b. about 1697; Samuel Estes; ThomasEstes, md. Ann --, d. in Caroline Co. 1744; Richard Estes; RobertEstes, md. in Lunenburg Co.; John Estes; Moses Estes, Elisha Estes;Barbara Estes (Land Office Records)."P. 126, Cary-Estes Genealogy: letter to Mrs. Webb from Blanche AdamsChapman: ..." I am also sorry that the research in the land officegave no earlier information of the Abraham Estes of King and QueenCounty. He, evidently, bought of "married" the land he paid tax on in1704..."P. 126, Cary-Estes Genealogy: another letter to Mrs. Webb from BlancheAdams Chapman: I fear you will never find any further clues to thechildren of Abraham Estes, Sr., beyond those certainly proven by therecords from land office. The loss of King and Queen records willprevent your ever knowing definitely which are sons and whichgrandsons. I am hoping Mrs. Nugent's next book of Land Patents willshow when Abraham Estes came and who brought him in. This seems youronly hope, to learn anything of him, unless some English boat listgives him..."In a footnote, R.A. Stewart wrote: "I have had access to the proofsheets of Mrs. Nugent's Vol. II, but found no further mention ofAbraham Estes" (p. 127).From the "Journals of the House of Burgesses of Virginia", Vol.1752-58, p. 9: "Petition of Abraham Este for a Runaway negroe who hathrunaway and was found in the woods, was offered to the House and thequestion being put that the said Petition be received. It passed inthe negative."Vol. 1758-61. page 39, also page 64: Saturday the 7th of Oct. 32, Geo.II, 1758: Several claims of Abraham Este (other names given also) fortaking up Runaways, therein mentioned.Abraham's children were: Abraham, Jr. (born abt. 1697); Samuel,Thomas, Richard, Robert, John, Moses, Elisha (born 1699); and Barbara(died at age 16).ABRAHAM ESTES, born 1647 at Nonington, Kent, England. Abraham'sbaptism recorddoes not survive, however he was mentioned in his mother'swill. He wasa linen weaver at Sandwich, Kent, by 1672. He married AnnBurton (awidow) of 29/12/1672, at Worth, Kent. Abraham emigrated tothe Britishcolonies in North America, arriving before 1682. On20/4/1682 Lucy Keelingclaimed headright for Abraham and 5 others, their passageto Virginiahaving previously been arranged and paid for by herdeceased father,Thorowgood Keeling. Thorowgood died 8/1679, so it is likelyAbraham eitherarrived or his passage had been arranged prior to this. Itwas a commonpractice for wealthy residents in the America's to sponsoremigrants, whowould then serve an indenture to pay off the cost of thevoyage. The typicalindenture lasted seven years, after which the emigrantwould be free to marryand obtain his own property. Since Abraham was still inEngland by the start of1673 and was a "freeman" in Virginia by 1683, it is likelyhe voyaged to theAmerica's around 1674/1675. According to an unsourcedclaim, Abraham arrived onthe "Vana". It has been speculated that his first wife, AnnBurton, diedenroute to Virginia, tho' there is no evidence. In 1683 hewas living in NewKent Co, VA, before settling in the parish of St Stephen's,King and QueenCounty, VA. In 1683 he was a signatory of a petition whilstin St.Stephen's Parish. In 1704 he paid quit rent on 200 acres inKing andQueen County. Abraham died 21/11/1720, in King and QueenCounty,Virginia, leaving his estate to his wife, Barbara. Barbaramade her will25/11/1720, leaving part of the estate to several of herchildren and theremainder to Elisha Estes and Thomas Poor and wife Susanna, for theraising of Moses and Barbara, who upon their parentsdeath's wereraised by Thomas and Susanna Poor. http://www.triode.net.au/~dragon/ft/estes-ab.Texast
Several References have listed Barbara Brock as the 2nd spouse of Abraham. According to an article by Garmon Estes in Estes Trails Periodical dated December 1998, page 5, -there is a doubt about Barbara's maiden name and whether Samuel was a child of this marriage. This area needs more research. Roy Eastes, compiler.
Barbara is also listed in AFN: 8SB4-B7.
