3243. John Wesley Eastes Dr

Dr. John Wesley Eastes died suddenly on 31 December 1976 a few minutesbefore midnite from a heart attack. At the time of his death, Dr. Easteslive in Brevard, North Carolina. However, he and his wife were visitingtheir son in Sarasota, Frorida over the Christmas and New Years Holidayswhen the tragedy occurred. He was buried with Masonic Rites on 6 January1977 in Greenfield, IN where he was born.

Dr. Eastes graduated from Mt Comfort High School in 1927and obtained aB.S. Degree in Chemistry from Butler University in Indianapolis in 1931.He continued his education and was awarded an M.A. and PHD Degrees inchemistry from the University of Cincinnati, Ohio in 1933 and 1936.

From 1936 through 1941 he worked for Rohm & Haas in Philadelphia. PA.He married Jane Lawson in 1941. From 1941 through 1945, he served as aCaptain in the Chemical Corp in the U.S. Army in WW II. From 1946through 1952 he was employed by the American Cyanamid Co., in BoundBrook, NJ. From 1952 through 1960 he worked for Scott Paper Co. inChester, PA. From 1960 through 1975 he worked for Olin Corp., EcustaPaper Division in Pisgah Forest, NC. Dr Esates retired in 1975 and inhis letters he told of how much he was enjoying his leisure time workingwith the Presbyterian Church, hunting, fishing and working in hisgarden. Many of the family records contained the books, The EastesFamilies of Indiana and The Descendants of Elisha Estes of Roane County,Tennessee, were supplied or verified by Dr. Eastes.

Dr. Eastes served his Church in many capacities over the years as anElder and teacher. At the time of his death, he was Chairman of theCongregational Shepards and the Pulpit Nominating Committee.

At the time of his death, Dr. Eastes owned the land where Obadiah Eastesand Francis Harvey chose as their home and the site of the Eastes/HarveyCemetery near Mt Comfort, Indiana. At this time, July 2000, the propertybelongs to his widow, Jane Lawson Eastes of Brevard, North Carolina.
